ID Requirements - Flying within Canada

JUNE 18 - SEPT 18, 2007
Canadian air passengers who appear to be between 12 and 17 years of age will be required to present only one piece of government-issued ID without photo.

The following pieces of valid government-issued ID may be counted toward the requirements:

- Passport - Driver's license
- Citizenship card - Health card
- Permanent Resident card - Provincial/Territorial government identification cards
- Birth Certificate - Record of Landing Form / Confirmation of Permanent Residence
- Immigration documents issued to foreign nationals
- Social Insurance Number (SIN) card

Permitting travellers under 18 years of age to fly with only one piece of ID allows families to maintain their travel plans over the summer, as they become aware of the full requirements of the Passenger Protect Program that will be in place in September.

AFTER SEPT 18, 2007

All passengers planning to travel on Canadian domestic flights, who appear to be 12 yrs of age or older, are to present the following ID before boarding:

- One piece of valid government-issued photo ID that shows name, date of birth and gender
OR
- Two pieces of valid government-issued ID (without a photo), one of which shows name, date of birth, and gender
AND
- The name on the identification must match the name on the boarding pass

All rules for flights to the United States and other international travel continue to apply. The verification of passenger's ID is already a practice followed by most major air carriers in Canada.

ALBERTA'S PEACE AIR GROUNDED
One of Alberta's oldest airlines has folded, and an airline analyst says Edmonton Airports might be partly to blame.

Peace Air, which served towns across Alberta and into British Columbia has ceased operations. Its staff have been laid off and its aircraft are to be sold.

Traci Bednard, spokesperson for Edmonton Airports, said one of Peace Air's problems has been that an increasing number of air travellers from the town of Peace River, home base of the airline, drive to Grande Prairie to catch low-cost flights rather than use Peace Air.

CANADA TO LAUNCH "NO-FLY" LIST AS OF JUNE 18, 2007
A Canadian "no-fly" list of people to be barred from boarding domestic and international airline flights began June 18, just as the busy summer flying season got underway.

The move, nearly six years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States, amounts to a flight blacklist of people "reasonably suspected" by federal officials as immediate threats to the safety of commercial aircraft, passengers or crew.

U.S. RELAXES PASSPORT RULES FOR REGIONAL TRAVEL
The United States is temporarily relaxing new rules requiring passports for US citizens flying to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean because of a huge passport application backlog.

The decision, announced a day after a controversial bill to revamp immigration laws and tighten border security stalled in Congress, will make it easier for thousands of Americans to keep their summer vacation plans but may expose the White House to criticism that it undermines border security.
